CHAPTER ONE

1. INTRODUCTION
   1. AIR – CONDITIONER

Air-conditioning is now  increasingly popular all over the world and is regarded as a commercial and business necessity in nearly all tropical nations. At one time, the familiar saying. “Everybody talk about  the weather, but nobody does anything about it”. It was certainly  truth. But today is no longer true, for air conditioning engineers, contractors, manufacturers, and technicians are modifying indoor weather everywhere, consider for a moment the consequences which would result if all air conditioning system were to stop, industrial production would be adversely affected and activities involving computers, electronics, air craft, precision manufacturing, nuclear power, optics and synthetics, infact most areas of modern progress would come to a halt.

       Today in business, industry, school, hospitals, hotels, theaters and homes, air conditioning is no longer consider luxury but an essential part of modern living.

 

1. DEVELOPMENT OF AIR-CONDITIONER

The development of air-conditioning industries is an interesting story; illustrating well necessity for close working relationships among scientific , engineering, productions and sales personnel comfort or process, air conditioning had its beginning with mechanical refrigeration on the late 1960’s.  But it was until 1917, when will is it. Carrier began to meet the challenges of designing suitable equipments.

       During the 1930’s the production of air-conditioners began and by 1940, the industry was established on a firm scientific, engineering and production basis but with a limited market for its products.

 

1. THE AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THIS PROJECTS

The aims of choosing this project, is to put in order the damage air conditioner in proper shape and better condition for use.

       To give a wide knowledge of an conditioner types of operation and uses to the project group (that is student participation in the project).

       And also to show or prove that it is cheaper to repair faulty air-conditioner than to purchase a new one.

 

1. BASIC CONTROL CYCLE SYSTEM COMPRESSOR CRANKCASE HEATER

The heater prevents accumulation of refrigerants in the compressor crankcase during the non-operating period and prevent liquid slugging or oil pump cut on the  start-up. Additional protection of the compressor and system is afforded by a high and low temperature cut-out. The control is set to stop the compressor in the events that the system pressures rises above falls below the design operating range.

 

SOME OF THE OTHER BASIC CONTROL CYCLE ARE:-

1. Hot gas by-pass regulators
2. Electric solenoid values
3. Low side or highside flvat refrigerant controller
4. Oil separators.
5. Condenser pressure regulators
6. Suction pressure regulators.

OBJECTIVE OF THE PROJECT

The  aim of choosing this project are:-

1. To put the damage plant in proper sape and better condition for effective use.
2. To give a wider, knowledge of the operating mode of an air-conditioner.
3. To be able to al least detect fault of an air-conditioner after carrying out this project.

 

1. JUSTIFICATION

For over two year or more, this plant has been out of use as a result of breakdown. This call for the repair and rehabilitation of the plant.

Also rusting of components parts, stiffing of morning parts roughness of the components, considering all these abnormalities that has be falling this air condition, the  project group ha tried its best to put it into working condition for effective use.

Now this air conditioner could add to the number of functioning plant that the department could record to its credit.

Therefore the choice of choosing this project is an added advantage to the department and as well to the students.

Considering the present cost of a new compressor which is about N23,000.00. It is very wise to therefore maintain or service an air conditioner at least once a year to overcome the deterioration of an air conditioner.
